FISH MDC Announces New Amphibious Craft Design for St Aubyn’s Estate and The National Trust
St Michael’s Mount, Cornwall UK
FISH MDC is pleased to announce a significant new design project in collaboration with M2ED and EMS commissioned by St Aubyn Estates and the National Trust.
The project centres on a new 12‑metre amphibious craft that will provide a vital transport link for residents of St Michael’s Mount during the winter months, when the regular ferry boat service is unable to operate. This new vessel will ensure year‑round access to the island, even in the most challenging conditions.
The project has already attracted public interest, with BBC’s Countryfile recently visiting St Michael’s Mount and highlighting the plans for the new craft during their feature on island life.
Pete Murphy, Managing Director at FISH, emphasises the complexity and importance of the design:
“This is not a simple project; the vessel transitions from land to water up to 40 times a day. Add to that regular deployment through breaking surf in the depths of a Cornish winter, and you begin to appreciate how capable this craft must be. We are extremely proud to be entrusted with designing such a key piece of infrastructure for the island. Ensuring a reliable lifeline for the residents of the Mount is essential.”
The existing vessel has served the island for more than 20 years - an impressive tenure given the challenging environment.
“We know the new craft has big shoes to fill, but we have a hugely capable team and have worked closely with the St Michael’s Mount boat crew to ensure the new design meets every requirement and will be a trusted asset in island life for years to come.”
The new craft will also be capable of operating on HVO (Hydrotreated Vegetable Oil), reducing emissions around the island - an important sustainability goal for everyone involved.
FISH is known for its diverse marine design portfolio, spanning hydrofoils, race yachts, military vessels and a wide range of commercial craft. This new amphibious vessel adds yet another feather to an already varied repertoire. It’s certainly not boring around here.
